It also refers to the direction of trailers to short road distances as from a depot to a rail yard and back.

A shunt is considered to be the process of a truck pinning to a designated trailer, moving this trailer to the planned location, and then dropping it in said location. Shunting is the continual flow of multiple shunts that occur to and from a yard’s doors to their multiple locations in the yard, throughout a working day.
